IBEX Science Team Meeting
Space Research Centre PAS
June 28 - 30, 2017
The IBEX Science Team meeting will be held in the premises of Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CBK PAN), Bartycka 18A, 00-716 Warsaw, Poland, June 28 – 30, 2017. We plan to have three full days of science sessions.
Traveling to Warsaw
Warsaw, Poland, can be reached by air, by train, or by car. The Warsaw Chopin Airport is served by the Polish flag carrier LOT, member of Star Alliance, as well as major European carriers: Lufthansa, British, Air France, KLM, to name just a few. LOT offers direct connections from JFK and Newark in New York, from Chicago O’Hare, from Los Angeles, and from Montreal. The Warsaw airport is located wonderfully close to downtown (~10 km). Another option is to try Ryanair, but they operate from an airport located ~50 km (Modlin), with much less convenient connection to Warsaw.
The central railway station is located in the very downtown Warsaw.
CBK PAN is located relatively close to downtown, in a rapidly developing neighborhood of Warsaw. Plenty of space for walks, but also plenty of views of new houses and businesses. The institute can be easily reached by public-transportation buses; it is served by lines 167 and 108, the stop to leave at is Figowa. It can be also reached by taxi; in this case make sure you convey to the driver the exact address: Bartycka 18A; the A after 18 is important because our premises are not visible directly from the street – we are located behind the Nicolas Copernicus Center for Astronomy, located at Bartycka 18 (without A!). Having left the bus, please take this walkway:
The Polish currency is Polish Zloty (PLN). It is a convertible currency (both ways). Money can be changed in exchange kiosks at the airport and in major hotels as well as some other locations. PLN can be drawn from ATM machines using credit cards. Major credit cards are accepted in most businesses.
Basic English is understood by most people you will likely have contact with, e.g. hotel, restaurant, higher-profile shops.
Tips are welcome in typical situations (hotel, taxi, restaurant) but not obligatory. Some of the restaurants ask for a service fee for larger groups. A typical tip is much less than the US 15% rate, more like 5 – 10%, depending on the level of your satisfaction.
Moving around in Warsaw is easy using public transport. The system includes bus and tram lines, as well as city train system and two metro lines. One ticket is valid within the city for all those means of transportation. The web page of the ZTM public transport company is available here:
Also usable is the route planner available in Google maps.
Public transport in Warsaw is paid. The ticket system is based on a time since validation scheme. Details are available here:
Tickets can be purchased in newspaper kiosks, in ticket machines installed in some of the buses and trams, as well as in some of stops, in all metro stations etc. Also, tickets may be purchased from the driver at a small surcharge, but then an exact price must be paid (the driver has a very limited ability to issue the change). Tickets must be validated in yellow validators inside the vehicles or at the entrance to the metro stations.
In addition to public transport, many taxi companies are available. It is recommended to use large corporations, as more accountable. Taxis can be hailed, picked up from taxi stops (e.g., there is a well- organized taxi stop at the airport) or arranged by phone. The fare from the airport to the Sheraton hotel is approximately 40 PLN (~10 USD). The fare is by meter reading, visible to the passenger. The drivers speak at least basic English. The phone numbers for selected taxi corporations are available here:
Several potentially interesting maps for transitioning from the airport to Sheraton, from Sheraton to CBK PAN etc. are here:
1. Lotnisko Chopina - Sheraton Hotel
2. Sheraton Hotel - Bartycka 18A
3. Sheraton Hotel - Lotnisko
Hotels can be booked in a typical way, directly or using most of the popular booking portals. Book early since June/July is the high season in Warsaw! We have arranged a block reservation for a limited number of rooms in Warsaw Sheraton. The link to the dedicated reservation site for the IBEX Science Team Meeting is here:
The rates should be compatible with the US government rates for Warsaw and include overnight breakfast and in-room Wi-Fi. The special rate covers the time from Monday June 26 until Sunday July 1. Please book early!
We plan to provide a shuttle bus from Sheraton to CBK PAN in the morning and then back to the hotel in the afternoon. For those of you who prefer public transport, the hotel is easily reached by bus 108 (go from the Figowa stop to the terminal station at Plac Trzech Krzyży).
The hotel is located in the downtown area, near the most prominent shopping district, with plenty of restaurants within the walking distance, nice parks nearby, with the picturesque Old Town within a ~10 min. bus ride.
