PROJECT DEMETER

Project Demeter
DEMETER is a project of low altitude microsatellite that mainly aim the study of electromagnetic signals in the ionosphere related to seismic or volcanic events. Its launching is expected for beginning of 2004. It will be the first mission of the CNES microsatellite issue.

Scientific Objectives
Study of ionospheric perturbations in relation with seismic activity. Global study of the Earth electromagnetic environment.

Scientific Payloads
A search coil magnetometer
A set of four electrical probes
A plasma spectrometer
A langmuir probe

The Physical Parameters measured by DEMETER
Burst mode Waveforms of three electric components from DC up to 1 kHz namely: three magnetic components from 10 Hz up to 1 kHz, one electric and one magnetic from 1 Hz up to 15 kHz.

Survey mode
Spectral analysis of one electric and one magnetic components from 1 Hz up to 15 kHz and one electric from 15 kHz up to 10 Mhz.

In both modes (but with different time resolution
Measurement of the neutral atmosphere (density, temperature, velocity, composition) and local ionic and electrical densities from 103 to 106 cm-3. Measurement of the local ionic and electrical temperature as well as the densities, temperatures and velocities of the major ions (H+, He+, O+, NO+) and electron spectrum.

Space Research Center PAS is involved in developing either of the hardware and software for this project. The power supply module for whole scientific has been built in SRC. Photos below. (J. Błęcki)
