EDUCATION AND EVALUATION ACTIVITIES IN THE SPACE RESEARCH CENTRE

In 1998, SRC scientists lectured at the following university departments:
  • Dr. J. Blecki: Geomagnetism and atmospheric physics - Warsaw University, Department of Physics, Faculty of Geophysics;
  • Docent A. Brzezinski: Selected problems in celestial mechanics (lecture and exercises) -Warsaw Technical University, Department of Geodesy and Cartography;
  • Professor A. Jurewicz, Dr. M. Rataj: Physical basis of remote sensing (lecture and exercises) - Warsaw University, Department of Geography and the Interdepartment Study of Environment Protection;
  • Professor B. Kolaczek, Docent J. Latka: Elements of satellite gravimetry and dynamics, Warsaw University, Department of Physics, Faculty of Geophysics;
  • Docent W. Macek: Non-linear dynamics and deterministic chaos, Warsaw University, Department of Physics (monograph lecture);
  • Professor G. Sitarski: Celestial Mechanics, Warsaw University, Department of Physics, Faculty of Astronomy;
  • Dr. J. Nawrocki: a monograph lecture for students of astronomy and geophysics of, A. Mickiewicz University in Poznan.
  • Dr. S. Schillak: Observational methods in geodetic astronomy, A. Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Department of Physics, Faculty of Physics of Earth and Atmosphere.

Furthermore, Professor T. Chojnicki was a supervisor of a tidal seminar for Ph.D. students at the Warsaw Technical University, P. Koperski was a supervisor of exercises to the lecture on "Multi-user operating systems" in the College for Applied Computer Science and Management in Warsaw, and W. Kosek and J. Nastula supervised exercises for students of geophysics at the Warsaw University. J. Nawrocki and K. Ziolkowki lectured at on-going training courses for schoolteachers of astronomy and physics, organised by the Department of Physics of the Poznañ University and the Polish Association of Physics Teachers, and by the Nicolas Copernicus Astronomical Center PAS and Department of Physics of the Warsaw University.

SRC scientists (A. Brzezinski, T. Chojnicki, W. Macek, G. Sitarski, J.B. Zielinski) served as supervisors of Ph.D. theses, one of which was completed in 1998. M. Blecka, M. Denis, J. Nawrocki, M. Rataj, K. Vorbrich) were supervisors of seven master theses, completed in 1998.

The institute has formal agreements on cooperation in teaching with the Warsaw University (De-partment of Physics, Faculty of Physics of Environment, and Department of Geography, Multidiscipli-nary Study of Environment Protection), Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznañ (Department of Phy-sics), and Warsaw Technical University (Department of Electronics and Department of Geodesy and Cartography). The facilities of the institute are made available for students of these departments for laboratory and graduation work.

In 1998, SRC scientists reviewed two PhD theses and one habilitation thesis. They prepared 15 referee reports, including 8 for international journals, and 12 referee reports on grant applications for the State Committee for Scientific Research.

Some of them were members of editorial boards of the following periodicals: Radio Science (A. Wernik), Artificial Satellites, Geodezja i Kartografia, Przeglad Geodezyjny, Delta, Urania;

and two of them served as editors:
W Pachelski - Artificial Satellites, and T. Chojnicki the F series of the Publications of the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

M. Krolikowska-Soltan is the editor of the department "Niebo nad nami" ("The sky above us") of the Polish edition of the Focus magazine.

SRC scientists have also been active in the field of popularisation of science, delivering talks in the media and publishing popular articles and books, willing to familiarise the broader public with the actual phenomena and events in the Solar System and in the field of space exploration as well as with practical application of satellite technology.

In 1998, they took part in a discussion on land information system in Poland and computerisation of the cadastre in Poland, published by the Geodeta periodical, (W. Pachelski); authored three entries for the Polish edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica (Copernicus, Kepler, Mars - K. Vorbrich); translated a book "Space Encyclopedia" by J. Gribbin (J. Blecki in collaboration with M. Blecka and M. Denis); translated articles for the Polish edition of Scientific American (M. Bzowski); worked up initial version of several chapters of a manual on DGPS for the Nautical School in Gdynia (K. Vorbrich).

Furthermore, they were invited to deliver talks for general audience in international (A. Brzezinski, Z. Klos, W. Kosek, A. Wernik), and national (J. Nastula, B. Sylwester, J. Sylwester, K. Vorbrich, K. Ziolkowski) institutions.

The institute participated in the Festival of Science organised in Warsaw in September 1998.

The institute's scientists delivered 120 interviews for the radio and 35 for television as well as about 90 news releases for the Polish Press Agency.
