established
the Interdisciplinary Consortium

  Discorsi Galilei Logo

for consolidation of resources and undertaking of joint projects in the domain of the development and application of the European satellite navigation system Galileo.

The Consortium is ready to cooperate with other institutions and groups from Europe to prepare applications for the 7-th FP or for other programs related to Galileo.

The famous work "Discorsi e Dimostrazioni Matematiche, intorno a due nuove scienze" by Galileo Galilei became the foundation of the today's modern science and technology. The name Discorsi Galilei was chosen by our Consortium in order to stress the links to the Galilean thinking and to demonstrate its respect to the forefather of the modern European satellite navigation system.

Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences - Coordinator of the Consortium

SRC is conducting pure and applied studies based on space experiments in the field of space physics and Solar System research, and physical and geodesic studies of planets and the Earth. SRC is the only institution in Poland whose activity is fully devoted to space research and its applications in geosciences and technology.

The scientific staff consists of 25 senior scientists (14 professors and 11 associated professors) and 21 researchers with a doctor degree, They are supported by 47 specialists (physicists, astronomers, geodesists etc.) and technical staff.

SRC develops and manufactures space-qualified hardware. For the last 12 years the space instruments made in the institute visited or are going to visit the Earth_s orbit and deeper space in the frame of satellite projects and missions: APEX, CORONAS I, Interball_2, CASSINI/HUYGENS, PRIRODA/MIR, CLUSTERS, CORONAS-F, INTEGRAL, ROSETTA, MARS EXPRESS and others.

GNSS-related activities

SRC has done the first international GPS campaign in Poland in 1989 and in 1992 the EUREF-POL geodetic network has been measured by GPS technique in co-operation with the International Association of Geodesy Commission "European Reference Frame". This network is actually accepted as a fundamental geodetic reference frame for surveying and mapping in Poland. Other projects have been carried out:

  • Development of the DGPS master station
  • Development of the system combining the GPS and inertial sensors
  • Running of the GPS mobile laboratory
  • Development of the GPS time transfer receiver
  • Establishment and maintenance of the GPS permanent station in Borowiec
  • Establishing the GPS reference station for the sea level monitoring
  • Realisation of the active stations network in Silesia region

The Regional Warning Centre for Ionosphere is operating in SRC producing ionosphere models and radio-wave propagation predictions.

In the frame of the co-operation with the European Space Agency the monitoring station RIMS has been established for the EGNOS project.

National Institute of Telecommunication

It is a modern research & development institution employing over 300 scientists and experts with high competences in the field of telecommu-nications and information technology. Responsible for GNSS is Radio Communications Department, which also conducts work on systems, networks and devices in the fields: mobile land radio communications, radio broadcasting, satellite radio communications, television and design of devices for such systems.

University of Warmia and Mazury

The University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn was established on September 1, 1999. The University combines a 50-year tradition of the University of Agriculture and Technology, a 30-year tradition of the Higher Teacher Education School and a 450-year tradition of theological education in Warmia. The University employs ca. 3000 persons, including 217 full professor and 250 _ associated professors. 14 faculties provide education to over 40 000 students. The Chair of Satellite Geodesy and Navigation in the Faculty of Geodesy and Land Management is responsible for GNSS research and application.
